IPL Summary: Daredevils notch 3rd successive win

IPL Summary: Daredevils notch 3rd successive win

New Delhi: Some power-hitting from Dinesh Karthik and suicidal top-order batting from Rajasthan Royals ensured that the Delhi Daredevils notched their 3rd successive win in a row in IPL 2010.

Set a target of 189, the Royals’ reply never really got going and they ended up losing by 67 runs in an IPL at the Feroze Shah Kotla here on Wednesday.

Farveez Maharoof bagged the wickets of Michael Lumb and Faiz Fazal in the very first over.
Naman Ojha’s 27 gave the away side some much needed momentum, but once Ojha fell trying to up the ante further, it was all doom and gloom in the Royals camp.

If there were a man who could dig the Royals out of this deep ditch, it was Yusuf Pathan. He began in typically thundering fashion, smashing Sarabjeet Ladda for two sixes in the 7th over.

Royals’ almost extinguished flames of hope suddenly started flickering again, thanks to Pathan’s terrific start. But all that optimism died down the moment David Warner latched onto his 3rd of 4 catches in the match to dismiss Pathan off Amit Mishra.

It was all over right then and there less than 10 overs into the chase as the Royals went through the motions from then on.

Gautam Gambhir’s decision to bat first seemed to have clicked when Virender Sehwag came out all guns blazing. Yusuf Pathan was greeted with a 6 and a 4 in the very first over. And it all looked rosy until Royals pacer Sumit Narwal struck gold in the 4th over.

Both openers David Warner and Virender Sehwag fell to Narwal’s accuracy, which reduced the Daredevils to 25/5.

The Daredevils showed some semblance of recovery with Paul Collingwood and Gautam Gambhir going steady, but a horrific mix up between the pair saw Collingwood being run-out.

The introduction of Dinesh Karthik gave the Daredevils some much needed impetus, and along with Gambhir, Delhi looked like getting back on track.

Narwal struck again to dismiss Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir for 43. But that only intensified Karthik’s effort – he hit Shaun Tait for three consecutive fours in the 18th over.

The Daredevils vice-captain was in scintillating form, and the Royals bowlers had no answer for his ingenuity. The Royals finally got their man off the last ball of the innings, but Karthik’s 69 off 38 balls was enough for the Daredevils to set a testing target of 189.

Vijay, Raina fashion CSK win over RCB

Chennai: Opener Murali Vijay (78 off 39 balls) played a belter at the top of the order and left-hander Suresh Raina’s (44 not out off 35 balls, 4x4, 1x6) fantastic finish fashioned a huge morale boosting five wicket for the Chennai Super Kings over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 28 of the IPL 2010 at MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Wednesday.

This was Chennai Super Kings third win out of eight matches and collected two important points to stay in the hunt. For Royal Challengers Bangalore, this was third defeat after notching up four wins so far.

Chasing 162 for a win, Chennai Super Kings were off to a grand start. The big Australian opener Matthew Hayden and the stylish Murali Vijay shared an opening stand with 61 runs in 6.5 overs. On fire, the Indian opener Vijay was more enterprising than his accomplished partner as he took 24 runs, including three sixes and one four, off Praveen Kumar in the third over. But skipper Anil Kumble separated the dangerous pair by removing Hayden.

Slipping in a googly, Kumble had the Aussie stumped, who made only 14-ball 12.

Vijay went on to slam his half century in 29 balls (3x4, 3x6). The opener went on to strike three more sixes in his scintillating knock. He slammed Kevin Pietersen for two sixes in the 11th over. But the England bowler had his revenge having the batsman caught in the deep by Manish Pandey.

Chennai Super Kings lost skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Albie Morkel and S Badrinath but the cool Raina swung the match in favour of Chennai Super Kings with his superlative batting display.

Earlier, Jacques Kallis snatched the Orange Cap from Sachin Tendulkar of Mumbai Indians as the South African hit his fourth half century of the tournament to help Chennai Super Kings to score 161/4. Royal Challengers Bangalore started on a wrong note with the dashing Manish Pandey departing early, caught behind off Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Thilan Thusara.

Robin Uthappa batted for a breezy 13-ball 21 before left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati dismissed the Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman. Jakati was impressive as he bowled a tight line and length in the middle overs.

Kallis was steady and scored runs with his usual imitable style. The South African and young Virat Kohli added 63 runs in 8.4 overs. Kohli, who was ignored for the World Twenty20 championship, made 34 (24 balls). He became Jakati’s second victim.

The left-arm spinner even bowled a maiden over to finish with fine figures of 4-1-17-2. Kallis, who has now scored 362 runs from seven matches, fell in the 16th over while trying to steal a cheeky single from Suresh Raina at covers. He was run out for 49-ball 52 (7x4).

The dismissal of Kallis brought Kevin Pietersen (England) and Cameron White (Australia) together in the middle. Playing for the first time in this year’s tournament, the fifth wicket pair indulged in lusty hitting. They shared an unbeaten 44 runs in 4.3 overs with Pietersen and White remaining unbeaten with 23 (14 balls) and 21 (13 balls) respectively.
