Tua in unanimous points win

March 31 2010
David Tua last night inched closer to a world heavyweight title shot as he outpointed Nigerian boxer Friday “The 13th” Ahunanya in Auckland.
Tua, 37, won on unanimous points over 12 rounds at the Trusts Stadium, Waitakere, in front of a capacity crowd, including Prime Minister John Key.
Ahunanya showed a lot of grit and he absorbed a lot of punishment from a consistent Tua, who initially showed down his opponent with body blows.
Having fought Tua previously as a sparring partner, Ahunanya seemed to be fighting to survive instead of boxing to win.
Tua appeared frustrated towards the final rounds when he was unable to unleash his lethal left hook to finish the job.
While Ahunanya, 38, showed stamina, he was barely able to dish out any sort of punishment for Tua, who appeared to be in tremendous form.
This was a make or break fight for both boxers – the winner now having a better chance of a world heavyweight title shot.
Tua now extends his record to 54 professional bouts – winning 51 – 43 by knockouts.
