Kings XI Punjab beat Chennai Super Kings in Super Over

Chennai: Kings XI Punjab held their nerve to edge out the Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling Super Over eliminator, to record their first win in Match 16 of the IPL 2010 at MA Chidambaram Stadium here Sunday. It was the first Super Over of IPL 2010 which helped Kings XI Punjab break their three game losing streak.
Needing 10 runs for victory in the Super Over, Yuvraj Singh clinched the issue with a reverse sweep four off Muthiah Muralitharan in the fourth ball after Mahela Jayawardene had struck a six off the first ball. He was out the next ball but Yuvraj gave the Kings XI Punjab a much needed victory to kickstart their campaign in IPL 2010.
Chennai Super Kings could score only nine runs in the Super Over bowled by debutant Juan Theron. Albie Morkel hit a single off the first ball. Mathew Hayden’s Mongoose bat failed him and he was bowled in the second ball. Skipper Suresh Raina hit a six and a couple before holing out to Jayawardene at covers. Kings XI Punjab thus, needed 10 runs for victory in the Super Over.
Set to chase a modest 137 for victory, Chennai Super Kings started off very well as Mathew Hayden and Parthiv Patel (57, 58 balls, 4x4, 2x6) shared 65 runs for the opening wicket. Off-spinner Ramesh Powar, who opened the bowling with Irfan Pathan, broke the partnership.
He bowled Hayden for 33 (24 balls, 4x4, 2x6), but not before the burly Aussie opener has put his Mongoose bat to good effect. Skipper Suresh Raina was run out next for 15. Kings XI Punjab fought back into the match as M Vijay (0, lbw to Juan Theron), S Badrinath (2) and Parthiv Patel followed in quick succession.
The Chennai Super Kings thus, required ten runs in the last over. But Irfan Pathan bowled a super last over, where he dismissed R Ashwin of the last ball to tie the scores. Chennai Super Kings had this at the end of twenty overs scored 136/7, forcing the match to go into the Super Over.
Earlier, veteran off-spinnner Muthiah Muralitharan, the world’s highest wicket-taker, triggered a collapse within the Kings XI Punjab middle order.
The Lankan spinner dismissed skipper Kumara Sangakarra (15), who was dropped at 4, Mahela Jayawardene (3) and Mohammad Kaif. In fact, the Chennai Super Kings bowlers were outstanding today as they contained the Kings XI Punjab with incisive and disciplined effort.
Ravi Bopara, Kings XI Punjab’s leading run-getter, was out in the third over, caught at deep third man. However, left-hander Irfan Pathan, promoted to open instead of M Bisla, scored 32-ball 39. Left-hander Yuvraj Singh (43, 28 balls, 4x4, 2x6), having a poor run in the tournament so far, made an useful 28-ball 43 as Kings XI managed 136/8 in 20 overs.
Apart from Muralitharan, South African pace bowler Albie Morkel bowled splendidly to contain the Kings XI batsmen. Justin Kemp though bowled only one ball before walking back into the pavilion because of back pain.
