Gujaratis clinch Twenty20 title

The success of the Indo-Kiwi Cricket Club’s inaugural Asian Cricket League Twenty20 Tournament last week has prompted the organisers to look at a bigger tournament next year.


Twenty teams are being eyed for the next tournament scheduled to hit-off in the in January next year.


This first tournament, won by Gujaratis, attracted 16 teams and there was interest from more teams, one of the men behind it, Hiren Patel, told Sandesh.


Gujaratis defeated Bombay Boys in the tourney which attracted locally based international teams such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka – all sporting interesting names such as Warriors, Punjabi Riderz, Tigers, Sri Kalgidhar, Village Boys, Combined XI, Desi XI, ATSC, Friends XI, Swingers, Team X Racing, Baba XI, Sloggers.


Hiren Patel, who has been played for Grafton side in the Auckland competition for the past 18 years, said 20 teams for next year was a possibility.


“But that means looking for either a bigger playing venue with more pitches or another venue which can accommodate matches as well as Victoria Park.”


Hiren Patel said the tournament was a raging success and the organizers had only bigger things to look to for the next tournament.


Cricket-mad Hiren Patel and Dharmesh Patel initiated the idea of the tournament from the success of the indoor cricket tournament.


Gujaratis, led by Aziz Kothiwala, won $1000 in prize money and the runners-up Bombay Boys collected $500 for their fine efforts. Nimesh Amin of Pan World Travel was on hand to present prizes after the tournament.


Man of the Series was Jassi Singh, who won a trip to Australia courtesy of Pan World Travel of Mangere – the major sponsor of the tournament.


Other sponsors were Bata Industrials, West City Holden, Oporto, McClymont Law, Export33X, Global Financial Services, and Racing Motorsport.


The tournament kicked off on January 25, culminating in the final on March 8.
