Rock star of NZ cricket quits
It's a sad day for New Zealand cricket as one of New Zealand cricket's top players has called it quits.
Shane Bond, the fastest bowler ever in the history of New Zealand cricket, surprised everyone last week as he announced his retirement from all forms of the game, at his hometown in Christchurch.
Bondi, as he is lovingly called by thousands of fans, bowled his final express delivery, as he returned home from the T20 World Cup in the Carribbean. He expressed great satisfaction and pride in having played for New Zealand and the fact that he had realised his dream of playing for his country, that he had dreamt at the tender age of six.
Shane's international cricket career that spanned almost nine years was plagued with injuries. As a result, he played only 18 tests, 80 ODIs and 20 T20s in nine odd years . He captured 87 test & 147 ODI wickets. He was famous for bowling swinging yorker and deliveries consistently around 150 kmph.
Bondi played for Canterbury, Black caps, ICL and IPL in his career. His 6-19 against the Kangaroos in the 2003 World Cup, was an unforgettable performance, that will always be fresh in our minds.
To many of his admirers in India, he was just like a rock star, with his amazingly good looks, blonde hair and well built physique. The female fans will surely miss him. Having met him in person, he came across as a thorough gentleman, polite, unassuming yet charming.
Bond expressed his desire to pay back to the game of cricket that brought him name and fame at a later stage. He will be missed.
