Unstoppable Mumbai Indians make maiden entry into final

Mumbai: The Mumbai Indians were unstoppable Wednesday night and whats more they did it without their Captain Sachin Tendulkar.
The Mumbai Indians continued their winning streak to make their maiden entry into the Grand Final on Sunday, April 25th when they downed last years losing finalists the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs in the first Semi Final of IPL 2010 at DY Patil Stadium on Saturday.
The Mumbai Indians thus, also became the first team from the IPL to ensure a place for themselves in this year’s Champions League Twenty20 scheduled for September this year.
Led by an all-round performance by the West Indian Kieron Pollard (13-ball 33 not out and 3/17), the Mumbai Indians stamped their superiority to dash Royal Challengers Bangalore’s hopes.
But the match started on an ominous note for the Mumbai Indians as Orange Cap holder and captain Sachin Tendulkar fell cheaply to Dale Steyn with the score on 11. Left-hander Shikhar Dhawan (12) and Abhishek Nayar were awful with their running between the wickets. Dhawan was finally run out by Virat Kohli in the fourth over. Nayar and Ambati Rayudu added 39 runs for the third wicket. However left-handed Nayar played a poor sweep shot off Kevin Pietersen to be caught at short fine leg for an 18-ball 22. Mumbai Indians lost their fourth wicket with left-hander JP Duminy (3) getting out to Anil Kumble.
From there on, the Mumbai Indians did remarkably well to post 184/5, as they managed to change the flow of the game against the run of play in the last five over of their innings. With the game in a virtual dead-lock at the end of 15 overs with Mumbai on 107 for 4, a few of the Mumbai paltan in the stadium would have felt like packing up and going home. But things took a dramatic turn from there on end.
The left handed Sourabh Tiwary and the big man from Trindad had played some delightful shots to enthrall the crowds. Kieron Pollard played a delightful cameo to turn things around for the Mumbai Indians with a strong finish to 184 for 5 at the DY Patil Stadium. Royal Challengers Bangalore conceded as many 77 runs in the last five over. Tiwary remained unbeaten with 34-ball 52 (3x4, 4x6).
Pietersen and Kumble were economical with the former giving away only 20 runs in his four overs. But Steyn gave away 43 in four overs while Vinay Kumar was hit for 25 runs in two overs.
Jacques Kallis, who needed 20 runs to snatch the Orange Cap from Sachin Tendulkar was dropped at six when Shikhar Dhawan made a mess of a hook shot at deep fine leg off Dilhara Fernando. However, the Orange Cup stayed with Tendulkar as Kallis was caught behind off Lasith Malinga for 11. Tendulkar had a deep cut on his hand while attempting a catch off Rahul Dravid’s bat. Zaheer Khan led the side in absence of the injured Tendulkar. Rayudu affected a brilliant leg-side stumping to dismiss Pietersen off Harbhajan Singh.
Mumbai Indians established their superiority with two wickets in two deliveries. Robin Uthappa (26) failed to read a slower delivery of Pollard (3/17) and was caught in the deep. Dravid was run out the next ball. Pollard took his second wicket by having Virat Kohli (9).caught behind. Manish Pandey became Pollard’s third victim and Royal Challengers Bangalore surrendered meekly.
Mumbai Indians decided to play Sri Lanka medium pacer Dilhara Fernando ahead of South African Ryan McLaren while all-rounder Abhisek Nayar also played. For Royal Challengers Bangalore, Praveen Kumar came back into the team and they dropped Pankaj Singh.
The second semi-final, between the Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings, will be played today (Thursday).
