Hot yoga coming to East Auckland

A hot form of yoga, which originated in India, is coming to East Auckland.

Achel Hot Yoga Botany is opening on Monday, September 7 at 272a Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga, Auckland.

Free classes will run from September 7-10 with the official opening on Saturday 12th.
Hot Yoga, also known as Bikram yoga first came to Auckland in 2004.

The classes are 90 minutes long and practised in a room heated up to body temperature (37degC). The intense heat increases circulation, loosens tight muscles and cleanses the body of toxins through sweating, says Achel Hot Yoga studio owner / operator Ellen Adoko.

Bikram's Yoga, also known as Hot Yoga, or "Fire Yoga" is a style of yoga developed by Bikram Choudhury and a Los Angeles based company. Bikram Yoga is ideally practised in a room heated to 105degF (40.5degC) with a humidity of 40 per cent. Classes are guided by specific dialogue including 26 postures and two breathing exercises.

Choudhury lives in Beverly Hills and teaches at his self-founded Bikram's Yoga College of India in Los Angeles. Before emigrating to the United States, Bikram was trained at the Bishnu Ghosh school in Calcutta, India.

Ellen Adoko was trained by Bikram Choudhurey, the founder of Bikram yoga, in Los Angeles. She has taught yoga in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Ellen who is originally from Uganda, choose the name “Achel” because of its meaning “one/union”.

"In these times of recession, everyone tightens their spending, and things looked at as luxuries are cut out as stress levels heighten. We believe in the saying ‘Health is Wealth’,” says Ellen.

“The effect of yoga goes beyond the physical body and is proven to be a great stress relief, thus this is the best time to open the studio.

“As a positive service to the community that we belong to, there will be a designated koha (karma) class each week where entry is by donation ($5 minimum) and proceeds from the class will be donated to charity. This way hot yoga in East Auckland is accessible to all.

”Most of us are diligent and plan for our retirement financially but unfortunately many get to retirement and physically are not able to enjoy their time due to health reasons. In regularly attending hot yoga classes you plan for your physical well being now and for years to come.

“Bikram Choudhurey says “never too late, never too old, never too bad to start from scratch once again”.

Free classes are on:
