Auckland Harbour Bridge lights up to celebrate festival of Diwali

Auckland’s Harbour Bridge was lighted up on Thursday, October 18, to mark the Indian festival of lights “Diwali.”

This is the second building of national significance, after the Auckland Museum, to be lit-up in New Zealand to mark an important occasion related to India.

The Indian festival of Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance,” and has gained a global prominence over the period.

Auckland Harbour Bridge will be lit by Vector Lights with the colours and patterns of the folk art-form, from Thursday, October 18, to Sunday, October 21.

Aucklanders can view lighting from different spots around the city.

Speaking to The Indian Weekender, Hon. Consul of India, Bhav Dhillon who was present at the official ceremony for lighting up in downtown Auckland said, “It’s a great moment of pride for the Indian community in New Zealand.

“Earlier, Auckland Museum became the first building of significance to be lit up to celebrate India’s Independence Day and now this festival of Diwali.”

“This is a statement on the contributions that our Indian community makes in New Zealand, We certainly acknowledge and appreciate that,” Mr Dhillon said.

Aucklanders are all set to immerse in the experience of Indian food, culture and flavours of traditional and contemporary India, in the iconic Auckland Diwali Festival on Aotea Square and Queen Street on this weekend (Saturday-Sunday, October 20-21).
