Funeral of the fallen mountaineer today in Hamilton

Body viewing ceremony of Magesh Jagadeesan, the 32-year-old mountaineer who died tragically after falling into the Crater Lake in Mt Ruapehu on Saturday, September 22 will be held today at Seddon Park Funeral Home in Hamilton.

Emergency services were flown to the Crater Lake at around 1:50 p.m. on Saturday when the distress call was made.

Mr Jagadeesan was with his group of six friends and was trekking along the summit and had planned to build a snow cave and stay overnight.

As per the group members, they stopped to take a snack break at Dome Ridge and were packing when this accident happened.  While wrapping up to start the walk, one of the packs slipped down the slope, and two members of the group ran down to stop the gear.

One of the members was able to get hold of the gear while Mr Jagadeesan grabbed more another gear but slipped further down the slope and went off the edge towards the lake while his group members watched helplessly.

Members of the group also mentioned that Mr Jagadeesan was one of the most experienced hikers in their group and was geared with most trekking items.

Mr Jagadeesan’s body was retrieved by the members of his trekking group when the emergency services arrived, NZ Herald reported.

According to Mr Jagadeesan's social media profile, he was an ardent mountaineer who had successfully trekked on many Kiwi-peaks on many previous occasions including Arthur National Park.

Mt Ruapehu, Whakapapa & Turoa Ski Areas, the company looking after the Ski park acknowledged the incident on social media and placed a rahui in the area.

“It is with sadness that the iwi of Ruapehu: Uenuku, Ngati Tuwharetoa and Ngati Rangi, acknowledge the fatal accident where a hiker fell into Te Wai a-moe on Saturday, September 22.

A rahui was placed on the Te Wai a-moe area as a sign of respect for Mr Jagadeesan which was lifted at sunrise this morning.

"An open viewing of Mr Jagadeesan is being held today from 5 p.m. at Seddon Park Funeral Home on 49 Seddon Road, Frankton, Hamilton for the community and friends and a small prayer ceremony is also arranged for the deceased," Mr Ravindran told The Indian Weekender.
