Kavi Sammelan brings nostalgic memories, connects generations

The annual Kavi Sammelan or Ghazal Night hosted by the Urdu Hindi Cultural Association of New Zealand is more than just an evening of entertainment. The gathering of the poets and singers reading poems and singing ghazals not only brings nostalgic memories but also connects one generation to the other.

The annual event was held at the Fickling Community Centre in Three Kings on Saturday, September 1 in the presence of community leaders, senior citizens, Members of Parliament and prominent faces of entertainment in the community.

“This evening is not just about entertainment but sharing some meaningful poems and songs that touch the hearts and souls of everyone,” Mujeeb Syed, Secretary of the Urdu Hindi Cultural Association of New Zealand told The Indian Weekender.

The event was divided into three sessions, first was the Mushaira led by Roshini Chadha as the host and performed by Hannan Khan, Aijaz Ahmed, Dr Yousuf Quraishi, Ghouse Mujeed, Rahana Quraishi and Syed Mujeeb. The second session Kavi Sammelan was hosted by Preet Vyas and poems read by renowned poet Shiv Bhagirath, Chrirayu Bhatt, Bal Madan, Somnath Gupta, Baljinder Singh and Suman Kapoor from Hamilton.

The poems of these poets delved into more profound meanings of life and love; some compared their existence with their nature while others questioned their contributions towards the betterment of humanity.

The audience chuckled at times, and some sobbed while listening to really thought-provoking poems; it was a roller coaster of emotions for the audience at the event. The poems connected really well with the senior citizens bringing back the memories of their motherland, their village, town and cities they came from.

The third session for the event was ghazal singing by eight singers and performers known to the community. The president of UHCANZ Roopa Suchdev hosted the ghazal session performed by Jyoti Virk, Nisaar Mirza, Arvinder Vasudeva, Arif Zia, Kanika Dheish, Prabh Saran Singh, Sandeep Singh and Professor SD Mathur. Rashmi Sharma from India also mesmerised the poem lovers for the event.

The evening connected with different generations of the audience present in the event centre. While some performers were young- their poems and ghazals dated back to values and virtues written and said decades and centuries ago. With such strong and meaningful poems and ghazals- the event was able to bring together the audience and performers of different generations together under one roof- singing the melody of love and humanity.

A significant aspect of this Kavi Sammelan and Ghazal Night event was keeping the language Urdu and Hindi alive among the upcoming generations and celebrating its richness.

Parliamentarians Melissa Lee, Dr Parmjeet Parmar, Dr Deborah Russell, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Michael Wood attended the event. Shail Kaushal from Puketapapa Local Board, Jeet Suchdev from Bhartiya Samaj, Anne Degia-Pala and former parliamentarian Mahesh Bindra was also present at the event.

UHCANZ also used the platform to launch the seventh edition of the annual magazine Dhanak by MP Kanwaljit Bakshi and Michael Wood who applauded UHCANZ for retaining the two languages, Hindi and Urdu and keeping the culture and traditions of India rejuvenated.
