Indian I-Day celebrated in Christchurch with zeal

India’s 72nd Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic zeal and fervour across Christchurch to commemorate India’s freedom struggle. Flag hoisting ceremonies were held at Latimer Square and Ara Institute of Canterbury followed by some traditional patriotic songs and cultural performances.

At Latimer Square, community members gathered at 7:30 a.m. bearing the chilly weather, where Natu Rama from Indian Social and Cultural Club (ISCC) unfurled the national flag. The community then sang the national anthem and patriotic songs and congratulated each other. A ceremonial cake was also cut to celebrate the day.

On this occasion, Mr Rama reminded everyone to use the independence responsibly and particularly asked the younger generation to look after the independence.

Councillor Jimmy Chen and Beth Knowles were the guests of honour. ISCC looked after the community members who had gathered on this chilly morning. People who had come enjoyed hot chai with pakoras and cake.
