Northland Indian Association celebrates anniversary and Independence

The Northland Indian Association hosted an event to commemorate the 72nd Independence day of India which also falls on the same day of its formation day.
The event had a huge turn out not only from the Indian community across Northland but also members of the local Kiwi community. The fun-filled evening marked by cultural performances, games and patriotic songs raised the spirits of the Kiwi-Indians present at the event and also remembered the grand celebrations hosted by them in India.
A group of bhangra dancers staged a show/play recognising the contributions and sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and countrymen towards the freedom movement of the country.
The Independence Day celebration on Saturday, August 11 also marked NIA’s 11th birthday which was formed in 2007 with a small number of Indians living in Northland. The community members, although small joined hands to set up a forum to nurture and share the Indian culture, values and heritage.
One of the important highs and highlight of the evening was enthusiastic participation from the elderly community who danced on the stage and made the most of the independence day spirit.
