Akash Rampal selected Youth MP

National MP Kanwal Bakshi has selected Papatoetoe resident, Akash Rampal as his Youth MP. Akash attended Papatoetoe High School, and is now studying for a Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Auckland.
Akash will take up Bakshi’s seat when Youth Parliament sits on July 6 and 7, 2010. “Akash is an outstanding candidate who is confident, ambitious, and extremely bright. He is interested in environmental issues and has a splendid list of achievements for a young man his age. He will bring many talents to his role as my Youth MP.” Mr Bakshi says.
Two of Mr Bakshi’s colleagues have also picked Youth MP’s of Indian origin. Waitakere MP and Cabinet Minister Hon Paula Bennett has chosen Waitakere resident Sunil Sharma as her Youth MP. “I had the pleasure of interviewing Sunil as he had also applied to be my Youth MP and I know that Paula has picked a great candidate to represent her.” Mr Bakshi says. Maungakiekie MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga has chosen Onehunga High School student Monisha Singh. “Monisha is a bright young girl and I am sure she will represent Sam and Maungakiekie well.” Mr Bakshi says
Youth Parliament 2010 is an opportunity for young New Zealanders (16–18 years) to learn about New Zealand’s democratic process and participate in public decision-making. During Youth Parliament, Youth MPs debate legislation, sit on select committees and ask parliamentary questions of Cabinet Ministers.
Meanwhile, their Youth Press Gallery colleagues report on their activities and make sure they are held accountable to the public. In May 2010, the Minister of Youth Affairs, Hon Paula Bennett, will announce the Youth Parliament 2010 Bill to be considered.
