Immigration changes: Three-year post-study work visa for degree level 7 or above qualifications

In what seems to be a quid pro arrangement to appease the high-paying international education market, the government is proposing to increase post-study work visas from the current 2 years to 3-year tenure for students in degree level 7 and above courses.

"Work experience in New Zealand is important to many students who come here to study.  My proposals retain this while restricting an avenue of exploitation," Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway said.

The public will have the chance to have its say on these changes with consultation opening on Tuesday 5 June.

It is important to note that when seen along with other policy changes announced this morning, whereby the pathway from international education to residency has been abrogated, the students after completing their first post-study work visas, will not be eligible for an automatic extension of work visas based on a sponsorship from an employer.

Once students complete three-year work visa, the next work visas will be labour-market tested.
