Regional Fuel tax: National would overturn in 2020, if elected to power

National Party Leader Simon Bridges has confirmed that his party would scrap Auckland’s regional fuel tax if elected to power in 2020.

Mr Bridges was speaking at his first major economic speech in New Lynn, Auckland.

“Regional fuel taxes are unfair on New Zealanders. They are regressive and hit poorer New Zealanders the hardest.

“The fuel taxes the Government has announced will leave a typical Auckland family around $700 a year out of pocket.

“The regional fuel tax is simply punishing Aucklanders for the Government and the Council’s lack of fiscal discipline,” Mr Bridges said.

The Labour-led government had announced plans earlier this month to introduce a fuel tax of between 9c and 12c per litre over three to four years to pay for its 10-year transport plan.

The fuel-tax is set to come into force in July.

Mr Bridges affirmed that under a National-led government Auckland can have an investment in world-class infrastructure without regional fuel taxes.

“We know you can invest in world-class transport infrastructure without regional fuel taxes.

“We built Waterview and new roads and bridges around the country out of fuel taxes, while at the same time investing in Auckland and Wellington commuter rail infrastructure out of the consolidated fund,” Mr Bridges said.
