New team appointed at Auckland Indian Association Inc. AGM

Auckland Indian Association Inc., one of the oldest Indian associations in New Zealand, established to represent and support the growing Indian community in the country hosted its Annual General Meeting earlier this month.

Narendra Bhana, who has served the organization for several years was elected as the president at 2018 AGM and will head the team to achieve new goals of the community organisation.

The other newly elected executive officer bearers of AIAI are Dhansukhbhai Patel, the vice president of the Association, DrLingappaKalburgi as General Secretary, Champaben Patel and Himanshubhai Patel as first and second Secretaries, HershadbhaiJairam as Treasurer supported by BarwantbhaiBhika as assistant treasurer.

Community leader and member Nanette Nathoo retained her position as AIAI Law & Order Chair.

“This newly elected Executive Officers' team would like to extend their thanks to the outgoing Executive Officers for their dedicated service to the organisation to maintain its high standard and of course seek their cooperation to make transition period smooth and then carrying its business normal,” General Secretary DrLingappaKalburgi said.

The newly appointed president of the association welcomed the new team and invited the appointed office bearers to come up with their ideas, suggestions and queries to improve its services towards the community.

“I welcome the new team of executive officers to provide suggestions, advises, and innovative ideas to improve our services and to work smartly to raise the flag of AIAI high in the international community as one of the best Associations. Let us work together!,” President Narendra Bhana said.

The Auckland Indian Association Inc. was established in 1920 and opened its community centre Gandhi Hall on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, October 2, 1955. As the Indian community grew in number, the association eventually bought a new place in 1989 to build a multipurpose complex at 145 New North Road, known as Mahatma Gandhi Centre today.

The Mahatma Gandhi Centre is considered to be an iconic building for regular weekend one-stop-shop location events such as weddings and family functions, events of national and religious importance such as Indian Independence Day and Republic Day, Navratri, Deepawali, and culture activities like stage dramas, a hall for international speakers’ events and business forums. 

The Tagore Library at the Gandhi Centre is a renowned place holding a rare and rich collection of Gujarati literature and Indian history and culture in English and Gujarati. Due to these valuable resources, some of the schools in Auckland also visit Tagore Library regularly for reference.
