BOP Rotorua Indian Association Celebrates 90th Jubilee with Cultural Extravaganza

The Bay of Plenty Rotorua Indian Association (BOPRIA) marked a historic milestone on Saturday, 2nd August 2025, with its grand 90th Jubilee celebration, bringing together over 450 guests, including life members, community leaders, and dignitaries from across New Zealand.

The event also featured special video messages from Honourable Todd McClay and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

Hosted at the Equippers complex in Rotorua, the jubilee honoured BOPRIA’s rich history, which began in 1935 when a small group of pioneering Indian settlers formed the Association to support one another and preserve their culture in Aotearoa.

The celebration began with the traditional lighting of the diya, followed by a mihi whakatau from Kaumatua Kingi Biddle. Students from Otonga Primary School performed a spirited kapa haka, setting the tone for a day filled with cultural pride and unity. The programme showcased music, dance, and storytelling from diverse regions of India, reflecting the community’s heritage.

Life members were honoured for their longstanding dedication to the Association, while individuals who have served BOPRIA and the wider Rotorua community for more than 25 years received certificates of appreciation.

In his welcome address, President Shashi Patel said, “This Jubilee is not just a celebration of our past—it is a reaffirmation of our values: unity, service, and cultural pride. We honour those who came before us and commit ourselves to continuing their work with integrity and purpose.”

Dignitaries commended BOPRIA’s role in fostering multicultural20250802_163950 harmony in Rotorua, calling it “a shining example of how to celebrate culture while contributing meaningfully to the wider community.”

The evening concluded with a sumptuous Indian dinner featuring a variety of traditional dishes and sweets, followed by live music and dancing, which were enjoyed by all.

Known for organising events such as Holi, Diwali, International Yoga Day, and Indian Independence Day, BOPRIA continues to strengthen cross-cultural understanding and inclusion. With the success of its 90th Jubilee, the Association now looks ahead to its centenary with renewed enthusiasm and community spirit.

BOPRIA expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters for making the event a resounding success.
