Tamil New Year celebration to be a grand event

The Auckland Tamil Association has always made sure to leave no stone unturned when it comes to celebrating one of its biggest events, Tamil Puthandu or Tamil New Year. The Association is hosting a big celebratory event at the Freemans Bay Community Centre on Saturday, April 28 starting at 5:30 p.m.

This open-to-community event will see talented local singers and dancers and a renowned dance group from Singapore perform at the event.

The Rameshwara Group of Dance is a renowned Tamil performing group from Singapore that has been roped in to showcase its famous dance at the event.

“We wanted to do something different this year and though a lot of discussions and connections we established contact with a very famous dance group in Singapore and we are getting them to perform at our event,” Murli, representative of the ATA told The Indian Weekender.

“The Rameshwar Group of Dance is a troupe of 10 young talented dancers, and they will perform at the Wellington Tamil New Year celebrations and then in Auckland,” Vai Ravindran, President of ATA, added.

Renowned Tamil singer, actor and music director Yugendran Vasudevan Nair will also perform at the event. Yugendran has sung more than 600 songs for Tamil films in India and has worked with legendary music directors AR Rahman and Ilaiyaraja.

The Tamil New Year falls around April 14 every year and marks the first day in the Tamil calendar. The festival is widely celebrated across the globe by the Tamil diaspora especially in Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, US, UK and Australia.

List MP for Maungakiekie Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Under Secretary for Ethnic Communities and MP for Mt Roskill Michael Wood, wished the Tamil diaspora in New Zealand on the occasion of Tamil New Year earlier last weekend over a social media video. National Party leader Simon Bridges too conveyed his message to the Tamil community on this occasion through a Facebook video.

Organisers of the event are expecting more people attending the event than previous years as it is planned to be a high octane event.

“We are excited to see our local talent share the stage with the famous dance group from Singapore and celebrity musician Yugendran Vasudevan,” Mr Ravindran added.
