Community drenches in colours at ISKCON Holi

Holi celebrations at the ISKCON Temple are known to be one of the biggest in New Zealand. This event is visited by not just members of the Indian community but by almost every ethnic group present in Auckland.

Hosted at the massive open grounds of the Hare Krishna Temple in Kumeu, almost 40 kilometres from Auckland CBD on Sunday, February 25, the event witnesses one of the biggest footfalls in the country for Holi celebrations.

Like every year, the event had Indian classical dancers performing on the stage in front of thousands of people drenched in vivid colours from top to bottom. A very exciting part of the event besides the cultural dance performances and water splash from huge tankers is the traditional Haka performance given by a group also covered in colours.

New Zealand Police, Fire Service and St John’s ambulance was stationed at the venue mingling with the crowd and throwing colours at one another. Labour Party MPs Michael Wood, PriyancaRadhakrishnan, Human Rights Commission representative RakeshNaidoo and Constable Mandeep Singh from New Zealand Police were also present at the celebrations.

Besides an array of colours, the venue provided the crowd with a range of diverse stalls offering delicacies, drinks and snacks from different cultures.

The event commenced at noon but the public flocked the venue from 9 a.m. and the event ended with a Bollywood number just after 5 p.m.
