Telugu Association celebrates Makarsankranti

New Zealand Telugu Association hosted its first of many events planned for 2018.

On Saturday, January 6, community members gathered at Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall to celebrate Makarsankranti, the ancient Hindu festival.

The day marks as the first day of sun’s transit into Makara (Capricorn), marking the end of Winter solstice in India and longer days ahead.

The day is celebrated with immense festivity in every part of India with families going out for kite flying, making rangolis and hosting cultural programs around it.

The Association also prepared a special snack made only on the occasion of Makarsankranti called Ariselu and Sakinalu, which are made of rice flour and sesame seed.

The celebrations in Auckland included flying kites at the sports ground adjacent to the hall, cultural performances by children and Rangoli competition (MuggulaPotilu), which is an integral part of the celebrations.

The winners of the Rangoli competition were given 1 gram gold and 20 grams silver coins for their colouring marvel.

The newly appointed president of the Telugu Association Mrs Aruna Bhoompelli acknowledged the contribution of the members of the community and the volunteers for making this event a success and big entertainment for the entire community.
