Auckland radio station Apna 990 today kicked off a 40-hour radiothon appeal to raise funds for those affected by Cyclone Tomas in Fiji.
Cyclone Tomas, one of the most powerful to have struct the region in more than 20 years, has devastated the northern parts of Fiji, leaving thousands homeless, sheltering in evacuation centres.
The appeal by Apna 990 general manager Shaiyaz Mohammed kicked off at 8am this morning [Tuesday] and will end at midnight tomorrow.
Mohammed said several sites had been set up around Auckland where people could drop cash which will be used to by necessary food items for hurricane victims.
A bank account has been set up where people could deposit money for the relief effort..
Last year, Mohammed headed a similar appeal for (54-hours) – raising close to $200,000 for flood victims in Fiji.
He is expecting to collect more than $100,000 this time.
Mohammed said that later in the week he will be flying to Fiji for food distribution which will be supplied by a local Fiji based food supplier and is expecting to hand out $50 to $100 worth of food items to hurricane affected families.
