Auckland girl crowned Miss Australasia 2017

Jasdeep Kaur, a young primary school teacher in Auckland, was crowned Miss Australasia 2017 at the MMG Beauty Pageant held in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday, September 15.
MMG Beauty Pageant is one of Australia’s most renowned pageants and is organised by Simran Sethi and Gagan Kaur Chabra with an audience of more than 500 people.
Ms Basra was one of the three contestants who represented New Zealand. Among the total of 35 contestants in the race, Ms Basra was crowned Miss Australasia 2017 by Bollywood diva, and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen. Ms Kaur also won the title of ‘Miss Iconic’ at the event.
“Sushmita Sen is someone my childhood was always inspired by, and I was privileged to be crowned by such a beautiful soul. I was one of three people who got picked to be asked a random pageant question by her, it was a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Ms Basra said.
The contestants from (MMG) Miss, Mr and the Mrs Category enter four rounds: introduction, talent, question and answer and the contestants wore different attires for the four different rounds. The judges were amazed by Ms Basra’s Punjabi dance performance which was held during the preliminary rounds.
Ms Basra was placed as the first runner-up at the Miss IndiaNZ 2016 beauty pageant, and she also won the title of Miss Popular by the audience.
Besides teaching, Ms Basra has a strong passion for dancing. She teaches dance to children between the ages of four and 18 at The Virsa Academy in Auckland and has performed at many competitions and events.
Ms Basra is an ambassador for the Global Sikh Women which is based in London and also is part of a non-profitable organisation with the YSPN ‘Young Sikh Processional Networking'.
“I never knew that I would come this far in life. I hope I have made everyone proud. Australia and New Zealand are both my homes because such beautiful people surround me,” Ms Basra added.
