5.3 metres Saree fitting in a matchbox unveiled at Bathukamma Sambaraalu event

On the occasion of Bathukamma Samaraalu on Sunday, Telangana Rashtra Samiti of New Zealand (TRS) members organised a small fundraising for the weavers of traditional clothes back in Telangana, India.

The community members representing TRS put up a stall next to the hall inside Mt Eden War Memorial Hall exhibiting different items of clothing for men and women on sale.

The stall presented shawls, lungi, towel and saree that were hand weaved by weavers in Rajanna Siricila, Telangana, India.

The government of Telangana has taken an initiative of supporting the growth of the handloom industry back in Telangana and the poor weavers.

TRS New Zealand also presented a full-length saree that could fit in a small matchbox.

This particular saree is 5.3 metres or six yards long weaved by weaver Nalla Vijay, son of famous weaver Nalla Paramdamulu.

The saree has also been presented to former first lady of the United States Michelle Obama on her visit to Bangalore with former US President Barrack Obama in 2010.

“The saree takes seven days to complete, and we are selling it here to raise funds to help the poor weavers back in Sircilla, Telangana, India,” Vijay Reddy Khosna, President of Telangana Rashtriya Samiti told The Indian Weekender.

“We also plan to gift this saree to our next Prime Minister,” Mr Khosna added.
