Constable Lavleen Kaur: The ‘innocent face’ of resolute courage in the call of the duty to protect

For many in the community who are un-initiated with the seemingly harmless face sitting on a slightly petite body, Constable Lavleen Kaur may appear like any next door girl visiting Gurudwara.
However, that is only if you are not planning to test her resolute courage and commitment to fight for the cause of the good against the bad, which she is called upon to do in her everyday work in New Zealand Police.
This is something that an offender came to know the hard way sometime last year when he was challenged sternly by Constable Kaur who was chasing her down with a taser gun in her hand in a possible crime scene in South Auckland.
Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand has acknowledged and awarded Constable Kaur on Sunday, July 30, at Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib in Takanini for displaying courage and inspiring many young members of the Kiwi-Indian community.
The episode is related to the incident in July 2016 when Constable Lavleen Kaur through her instincts and courage foiled a probable crime.
Constable Kaur was alerted of a man’s intention to attack a person in Papatoetoe, south Auckland.
Constable Kaur along with her partner was able to locate the car being used by the offender while patrolling the victim’s area.
Constable Kaur and her partner signalled the offender to stop, but he continued which led to a short pursuit.
As expected by the officers, the man stopped at the victim’s house and ran towards the house. Constable Kaur armed with a taser gun and Glock firearm challenged the offender to ‘stop’ and ‘get down to the ground’.
The offender then surrendered and as suspected the police found a large pig knife in the offender’s pocket.
Constable Kaur through her quick mindedness and courage prevented a crime and averted causing serious injury to the intended victim.
Constable Kaur’s effort was recognised with the area commander’s commendation at Counties Manukau Police district awards earlier this year.
Since then, many other community organisations have felicitated her for her bravery.
Constable Gurpreet Arora from Counties Manukau and Constable Mandeep Kaur along with executives from Supreme Sikh Society of NZ were present at the ceremony.
