Australia opens online visitor visa application for Indian travellers

In a move signifying India’s growing importance in Australian world view along with increasing numbers of Indian visitors to Australia, the Australian government has removed restrictions previously limiting Indians from filing online applications for the visitor visa.
The Australian government has announced that the online application of visitor visa will be starting from July 1, thus enhancing the overall experience of Indian travellers to Australia.
Presently, the Australian High Commission based at New Delhi processes the visa applications for Indian, Nepalese and Bhutanese residents.
An individual has to lodge the visitor visa application in person after getting an appointment, or via mail or through a Service Delivery Partner, according to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).
As opposed to this, access to online application will be a significant enhancement of overall experience for prospective travellers with increased ability to submit an application online and deposit fees 24 by 7 without any time restrictions or having to present themselves in person at the visa office.
Alex Hawke, the assistant manager for the DIBP, Australia, while speaking to local media have emphasised on the ease of visa application through the online mode.
“Online lodgement for visitor visa applications is a significant enhancement that will benefit Indian applicants seeking to visit Australia as tourists or business visitors, or those wanting to reconnect with family and friends. Being able to check the status of an application online, as soon as it is finalised, will allow Indian applicants to finalise their travel arrangements as soon as possible,” Mr Hawke said.
In 2017, between January and April, the DIBP have already sanctioned more than 65,000 visitor visas to Indian travellers suggesting the rise of Australia as a popular holiday destination in India.
The online application process would be available 24 by 7 with added facility to make an electronic payment for the visa application charges. Simultaneously, users can also check the status of their applications through the ImmiAccount portal of the department.
With the visitor visa, a person can visit Australia for a holiday, business purposes, or visiting family for up to three, six or 12 months.
