Student protests at Mt Roskill polling station, escapes arrest.

A 20 something Indian students group facing deportation notice from the Immigration New Zealand sought to gain traction in media and public minds today by organising a protest at Dr Parmjeet Parmar's office in Mt Roskill.

Today was the voting day for the high decibel Mt Roskill by-election in which Dr Parmjeet Parmar is National party's candidate.

The by-election was necessitated by Phil Goff's election as the Mayor of Auckland earlier last month.

The student protesters gathered at around 12.00 p.m. today raising slogans against Dr Parmar for allegedly failing to help students facing deportation notices.

The protesters after raising slogans at Dr Parmar's office chose to march towards a nearby polling station hoping to gain some traction.

It is apparent that the student protest leaders have zeroed on the voting day with a clear intent to jeopardise Dr Parmar's chances of winning this by-election.

This naturally raises a genuine question on their integrity and sincerity to help the international students facing deportation charges.

Media was under embargo until 7 p.m. when voting ends in Mt Roskill to report anything that can potentially affect voters.

However, students seem to be unaware of the embargo placed on polling stations about any activity that can potentially affect voters on the election day.

Soon Police arrived at the venue and warned the protest leaders that if they breach electoral commission directives, then it is likely that arrests will be made.

It is not clear though that the international students already facing the music from the INZ would have preferred being arrested for an unlawful activity in the country - thus further jeopardising their case to remain legitimately in the country.

It is important to note that internatioanl students, despite their current unfortunate situation should be extra vigilant to indulge in any activity which could further affect their chances.

More details are awaited on this.
