Indian R-Day diamond jubilee in Auckland

India’s 60th Republic Day, which falls on January 26, will be celebrated in Auckland on Sunday, January 24. As well as the patriotic ceremonies that are traditionally observed on the day, this year’s diamond jubilee celebrations will also see a variety cultural programme.

India became a republic on January 26, 1950, when it also adopted its Constitution.

United Indianz, which also was instrumental in celebrating the diamond jubilee of Indian independence in August 2007, is organising the 60th anniversary of Republic Day this year, under the chairmanship of Mr. Roshan Nauhria.

This year’s programme is being held at the Aotea Centre, Queen Street, from 10.30 am to 2 pm. The High Commissioner of India HE Admiral (Retd.) Sureesh Mehta will hoist the flag. The ceremony will then be followed by a cultural show. Prime Minister John Key, Minister of Ethnic Affairs Pansy Wong and Member of Parliament Phil Goff will also attend.
 
The Auckland Indian Association, Auckland Sikh Society, Bhartiya Mandir, ISSO Swaminaryan Temple Papatoetoe, Manukau Indian Association, Probasee Bengali Association, Punjabi Cultural Association, Shanti Niwas Trust, Tamil Society, Telugu Association, Waitakere Ethnic community and Yogi Divine Society are the participating organisations. A souvenir to commemorate the occasion is being released on the day.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Samaj is celebrating the occasion at the Telstraclear Events Centre in Manukau on the same day with proceedings beginning at 12 noon. The event will feature the customary flag hoisting ceremony, which will be followed by a parade and a cultural show that will begin at 1pm, according to the organisers.
