Tearful farewell for Ajay Alva

Tearful farewell for Ajay Alva

Nearly 200 of the late Ajay Alva's friends, associates, colleagues and acquaintances joined his family in farewelling him at the Manukau Memorial Gardens at 10 am on January 3.

Several of his colleagues and friends offered eulogies and recalled the happy and fulfilling moments they had spent with Ajay, amidst tears. One close friend sang the last song that Ajay had sung at the New Year'e eve party that he had attended shortly before his death. A shloka from the Bhagwad Gita was recited by an elder.

As has been reported on the website, friends of Ajay, who was one of East Auckland's well-loved members of the Indian community, woke up on New Year's day to the shocking news of his sudden, untimely death. He was only 47.

He had been celebrating New Year's eve with friends and family and returned home with his family in the wee hours.

He apparently woke up with some discomfort early in the morning and walked to the lounge before collapsing. Family members' attempts to revive him were unsuccessful as were those of the medical team that arrived shortly afterward.

Ajay's large circle of friends, acquanitances, colleagues and neighbours flocked to his home throughout the morning of New Year's day, in a state of disbelief at the sudden loss of their dear friend who had no history of any ailment whatsoever and seemed perfectly healthy.

Ajay was widely known in the community as someone who was outgoing, friendly, generous and always there to offer any help he could muster. He was equally popular with his colleagues at his workplace. He always had a kind word for everyone and was one of the valued readers of Indian Weekender, providing frank feedback on our content.

His aged mother and sister Naina are currently here visiting from India. He leaves behind wife Savitha and sons Aniketh and Adhish.
