Malayalees take united step forward
The Kerala community in Wellington marked another milestone recently with the establishment of the Wellington Malayalee Association.

The community marked its presence in Wellington as early as 40 years ago and it has been growing ever since, but the way the community has grown over the past decade has been astonishing, especially the past two years.

“We have been blessed with lots of young and effervescent students who are playing a vital role in shaping the new-fangled structure of the Wellington Kerala community,” secretary of the newly formed association, Roshan K Sam, said.

“People from various religious, economic, educational, technical and other backgrounds from Kerala happily live in this Wellington region and that number is growing day by day,” Mr Sam said.

“We are proud of the fact that from the very beginning there has been a genuine effort from our community members to preserve and nurture the special culture of Kerala and foster friendships, but it lacked uniformity like in any other society without any form of structure in it.

Mr Sam said that creative evolution is inevitable in any and every growing society, and as the numbers grew, so did the needs, issues as well as divisions.

“As said earlier, the Keralites living in Wellington come from different social, financial, economical and religious backgrounds, and they all have different needs too.”

“Despite the fact that we get together once or twice every year to celebrate various Kerala  festivals and safe guard our cultural heritage, we have realised the fact that in addition to celebrating festivals,  we have a social responsibility to support our fellow Indian, ethnic and New Zealand communities.”

Mr Sam: “Success is a small step taken today and not a big deed in the future and now we are ready to take that small step. Today, we are extremely happy to announce the formation of Wellington Malayalee Association (Incorporated) which will be officially representing the unified Malayalee community in the Greater Wellington Region.

“This Association is a humble movement focusing on providing service to the people within and outside our community. This will be achieved by enhancing the cultural values and providing social empowerment through positive and productive leadership with timely changes and innovative ideas, with that in mind WMA has identified our mission as ‘servant leadership’.

“The association, together with other Indian communities, is hoping to communicate, contribute and create more valuable contributions to the India community in and around Wellington.”
On October 4, 2009, the Wellington Malayalee Association Incorporated held its first annual general body meeting and unanimously elected the following people as the office bearers for a term ending March 31, 2010.

President: Dr. Arun Abraham Elias; Vice President: Lissi George; Secretary: Roshan K Sam; Joint Secretary: Aniyan Mathew; Treasurer: Jayaprakash A Nair; Committee Members:  Dr Alex Thomas, Bristo Mathew, Shabin John Michael, Jojo Jose K
