Dr Muhammad Iqbal felicitated at Diwali programme

The Auckland Indian Association celebrated the annual Diwali concert at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre on October 24.

The programme was organised by Parshotbhai Govind and Akshita Patel (chairpersons of Entertainment Committee), and choreographed by Akshita turned out to be a huge success.

The theme of the programme was the experience of two Kiwi Indians who travelled to India knowing very little Hindi. There they met two local Indians who spoke rural Hindi but knew very little English.

The communication between Kiwi Indians and local Indians produced a very good comedy in between the items.

All cultural items were well presented. The items included prathana, songs and dances – Bollywood, Garba, Bhangara, Bharat Natyam and other classical items.

It was also an occasion to bestow honour and recognition to one of the stalwarts of the Indian community, Dr Muhammad Iqbal.

Dr Iqbal, 74, a Sri Lankan with Indian roots, was honoured for his contributions and leadership for the good cause of his community.

The concert was a great success and enjoyed by a good crowd of about 600 to 700.

The money raised by tickets and donations was just under $5000 which will be donated to the tsunami victims fund for Samoa.

“On behalf of the Auckland Indian Association Inc, I would like to convey my sincere thanks to everyone who supported the concert,” said Dhiru Patel, the association’s public relations officer.
