Queen’s Birthday on Queens Wharf

The Queens Wharf played host to a massive crowd that had come together to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. The fanfare commenced on Saturday, 30 May and lasted until Monday, 1 June.

Queen’s Birthday is celebrated on the first Monday of June every year in New Zealand, this is also when the names of the recipients of the Queen’s Service Medal are announced. This is also a public holiday and almost always falls on a weekend – so the long weekend is what most people wait for.

Shed 10 at the Queens Wharf saw a sale of Maori artefacts, homemade woollen jackets, scarves, beautiful picture frames and antique cutleries and pots.

Old vintage cars such as limousines made during World War 1, a fine collection of Mini Coopers made in the 1960s, some of the oldest Jaguars, Bugatti Veyron and Bentley cars were on display for public view at the Cloud.

Other activities included fun games for the children at the Cloud along with a photo booth where you could click a snap with a lady dressed as Queen Elizabeth. There were face painting stalls and also a movie corner that showcased the animated film Paddington.

The organisers also took this opportunity to promote the U-20 FIFA World Cup 2015 for which New Zealand is the host. Children could try their luck at mini football, play on a bouncy shaped as a goalpost and get their pictures clicked at football-themed photo booths.
