10-year passport to return in six months

Kiwis can expect the 10-year passport to return in around next six months according to Prime Minister John Key.

In an interview with TV3 this week, Key said that the increase in the validity of passport would “take a while” but it is expected to be implemented within next “six months or so”.

"The proposal is going to cabinet pretty soon," he said.

The increase in validity will come with a hike in the current cost to renew a passport. Key said that it would be more than current cost, i.e. $135 but lesser than the cost of two 5-year passports.

The validity of passports was reduced to 5 years in 2005 due to security concerns after 2001 terrorist attacks in US.

Last year, Australian-based New Zealander Kyle Lockwood appealed NZ Parliament to return 10-year passports through a 12,000-signature petition.
