Multicultural New Zealand positions to facilitate support networks and mentors for small medium ethnic businesses

On Wednesday, 28th of May, Multicultural New Zealand inaugurated its newly formed Multicultural NZ Business Advisory Board, chaired by Anthony Wenceslaus, to govern the Multicultural NZ Business Advisory Council. The formation of the Multicultural New Zealand Business Advisory Council is part of the outcome of the Small Medium Ethnic Enterprises business forum held in Auckland in April.

According to Tayo Agunlejika, the Executive Director of Multicultural New Zealand, the choice of Mr. Wenceslaus could not have come at a better time for the organisation, “Wenceslaus wanted a year break on laying down office as Chair of INZBC. He now looks forward to working with our business advisory board, which comprises of very committed and talented professionals drawn from different professions and associations. This is an exciting opportunity to build from inception and to work throughout New Zealand with different ethnicities to help small and medium businesses grow. Mr. Wenceslaus’ portfolio as chair of the Multicultural NZ Business Advisory Board entails working with various financial institutions, government departments/agencies, business associations, chambers of commerce and business communities at large to strengthen small and medium ethnic businesses in New Zealand.”

In its first year, the Multicultural New Zealand Business Advisory Council will work towards:

1. Encouraging cultural diversity in New Zealand businesses.
2. Supporting SMEEs with information on New Zealand business culture, environment, and encourage good business practices.
3. Encouraging ethnic communities to support SMEEs and SMEEs to support ethnic communities and multicultural projects.

The challenge for the Board that being the first time a thorough Strategic Planning, Processes and Systems have to be put in place.
The board has number of tasks ahead which includes Strategic Goals, Addressing the needs of SMES, Collaborative voice and Advocacy for SME, Capacity Building, Training and Mentoring Programmes, Maintaining a very close working relationship with the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs and other related Government Ministries and Funding. One of the issues we have to work through would be our National Reach and not concentrated in any particular region.

The main reference of the Board would be:

•To encourage cultural diversity in New Zealand businesses;
•To provide opportunities for networking between SMEEs, local and central government and the wider business community;
•To publicise the positive contribution of SMEEs to New Zealand and to work towards the reduction of barriers to participation and engagement with mainstream commercial and business associations;
•To support SMEE engagement with local and central government on issues that affect them;
•To increase the understanding of cultural differences that can hinder participation and engagement of SMEEs with local and central government and business associations
•To support SMEEs with information on New Zealand business culture and environment and other relevant resources, and encourage good business practices;
•To encourage ethnic communities to support SMEEs and SMEEs to support ethnic communities and multicultural projects;
•To explore how the voice of SMEEs can be better heard and to be an advocacy body for ethnic business

In the 1st Board meeting that was held on 28th May, the Board members , Peter Cordtz, Maria Pooley, Kane Smith, Gaz Maroof, Taz Mukorombindo along with a very efficient Administrative support from Tayo Agunlejika at Wellington were very committed and each were given portfolio to work through in the areas of Government Relations, Financial Institution Relations, Events, Business Mentoring, Membership and Relationship with various Business Associations.
