Tandon honoured for services to textile science

A long-time scientist is the only New Zealand Indian to be recognized in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours list announced this week.
Dr Surinder Kumar Tandon has been Senior Scientist, Apparel and Functional Textile, at AgResearch for the past 26 years.
He was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for his services to the community and textile science.
Dr Tandon has been educated at the University of Leeds (textile mechanics, 1984-1988); Indian Institute of Technology (1982-1984); and Maharishi Dayanand University (1978-1982).
To his credit Dr Tandon has numerous international awards and honours related to his research efforts in New Zealand, including 2011 Institute Medal awarded at the 88th Textile Institute World Conference in Malaysia in May 2012.; Fellow of the Textile Institute (UK); Winner of the Inaugural International Product Innovation & Commercialisation Award, the Textile Institute (UK), 2008; Member of the Council of the Textile Institute (UK); Paul Harris Fellow (Rotary International).
Dr Tandon was among scores of other New Zealanders honoured by the Queen this week.
The highest honour, the Order of New Zealand, went to Sir Ronald Powell Carter, KNZM, Auckland, for services to New Zealand.
