Yaadein, a vision for the world too

Yaadein Vision, the charitable mission focusing on educating Fiji’s impoverished children, has a worldwide goal.
Dinesh Chand, president of Yaadein Vision New Zealand, said that while the charity was focusing on Fiji’s needs at present, its long term vision is worldwide.
Yaadein vision started in Australian nine years ago by like minded people with a mutual goal for the children of Fiji. Yaadein Vision NZ started in 2007.
Chand said the charity was now also established in the United States and North America and it was only a matter of time before it was established in most of the major centres throughout the world.
“The name means remembering with strong vision for the future. Members remember with gratitude the efforts made to educate them and remember now those needing a helping hand.”
The organisation is comprised of volunteer members and is non-sectarian and non-political.
A current major project is to collect pre-loved library books. Donations of books are welcome. Volunteers will come to collect the books.
In a statement, Chand said: “School fees in Fiji are around $100 annually per child. Many families in Fiji cannot pay, especially in Western districts because of unemployment and economic hardship which were exacerbated by destructive floods in January 2009. This is particularly hard where there are several children in a family.
“As a result there are alarming numbers of children not attending school. For them, if they miss their education, the future is bleak condemned to poverty and even crime in some cases.”
Chand said that already children who should be at school were roaming streets begging, exposed to crime or involved in dubious activities. There is a danger that a substantial portion of today’s generation will lack qualifications to work and contribute to their own and Fiji’s prosperity.
“Unless this serious trend is reversed present and future generations will be at risk.”
This was where Yaadein Vision could help, Chand said. The charity work along the lines of World Vision where one can sponsor a child and then be able to monitor his/her progress through the years.
“Sponsors who commit $100 annually are given a photograph and profile of the student they sponsor and follow that student’s progress through primary and secondary levels. Sponsors may write to their student and may visit,” Chand said.
Other donors, individuals or businesses, may wish to contribute larger amounts to
help with equipping schools and making improvements. Yaadein Vision has provided
water reticulation, thousands of school books, computers, faxes and scanners, 100
new wheelchairs power generation and has sponsored 1000 students at 50 schools.
Planning is under way for a school, an orphanage and a retirement centre. The January
2009 floods left so many dead, many injured or missing, thousands evacuated, millions of dollars damage to infrastructure, no food, no clean water, many were left homeless. Almost everything was gone. A team of Australian and New Zealand volunteers with widespread financial support and goods from our own communities, businesses and transport operators went to Fiji with three container loads of over 12.5 tonnes of supplies, including 600 pre-packed food hampers and 32000 exercise books.
Later, in March, a fourth container of 10000 exercise books and 10000 pens and pencils were sent. Many families in desperate circumstances were helped. For example, one family had not eaten for three days and was most relieved to accept a generous food parcel. There were hundreds of similar examples.
New members, sponsors, donors and supporters are eagerly sought. Interested people should contact one of the following for more information:
