New policy standardizes Auckland dog rules

Auckland Council’s new policy on dogs will offer a regionwide approach to dog ownership and management when it comes into effect on 1 July.
“Previously, there were seven different ways of doing things, which was not practical to enforce, and confusing for the public who may have known the rules in their community, but not other parts of Auckland,” says Councillor Noelene Raffills, chair of the hearings panel.
“Now we have one approach across Auckland for the things that are important no matter where you are, like encouraging responsible dog ownership, dealing with dangerous and menacing dogs, and common dog access rules for footpaths, playgrounds and shared driveways.”
The local boards have authority to set dog access rules on local parks and beaches in their communities.
On parks and beaches, it means existing dog access rules for under control off-leash, under control on-leash, and prohibited areas will continue after 1 July, as will the current summer and winter time and season restrictions on when dogs are allowed at these locations.
The new policy on dogs also focuses on responsible dog ownership, dog welfare, community education, dog safe access to public places, registration and dog safe communities.
