Chef Kunal Kapur wins Edmund Hillary Fellowship

High-profile Indian chef Kunal Kapur has been selected for the Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship for 2012.  This year’s Fellowship will focus on promoting New Zealand’s food and beverage and tourism sectors to the rapidly growing Indian consumer market.
Kunal Kapur is Executive Sous Chef at the award winning hotel Leela Kempinski, Gurgaon. The restaurant he manages has won the best Indian restaurant award for the last three years.  Kunal has also been the host and judge on India’s popular ‘Masterchef India’ television show, and India’s ‘Food and Nightlife’ magazine has called him a “Gourmet Guru.”
The Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship is a tribute to the special contribution made by Sir Ed to New Zealand’s relationships with India and Nepal. Every year the New Zealand Government selects an upcoming leader from their respective field in India or Nepal to visit New Zealand. Kunal first visited Queenstown, and then toured Cromwell and its Farmers Market. He then travelled to Hawke’s Bay and then Auckland, meeting some of New Zealand’s leading food and beverages exporters.A high point of Kunal’s visit has been a joint cooking demonstration with New Zealand ‘Masterchef’ judge Simon Gault at Auckland’s Euro Restaurant on 25th January.  Chef Kapur will also visit Waiheke Island while in Auckland. The Fellowship was presented on behalf of the Prime Minister by the Minister for Primary Industries, Hon. David Carter, when he recently led a business delegation of New Zealand food and beverage and agritech companies to India.
