Waitakere Diwali rocks with fusion music and fireworks

Waitakere Indian Association Diwali mela at Trusts Stadium on Saturday 27 October, 2012, was a resounding success, according to President of WIA, Sunil Chandra. This was further reiterated by the Project Manager of Waitakere Diwali Mela, Roneel Singh who said that unlike other corporate or council organised Diwali events, WIA does not have any paid officials managing this event. Thanks to this volunteer-based community event which retained and maintained the traditions of Diwali.

After school dance competition, cultural and mix of Bollywood and contemporary music, the evening programme went into solemn Diwali theme and tradition. With national anthem in English and Maori on accompaniment of Indian music, the event went into traditional Aarti (hymn), followed by stage opera, Ram Lila, depicting the traditional and religious reasons for Diwali and messages of triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and life over death.

Executives and volunteers in distinctive pink uniform, showed their support for women and White Ribbon message. “We as a community organisation do not just host and mark festivals, but also use festivals to pass community messages and show support for vulnerable in our society. Our Officials and volunteers, in their pink and White Ribbons showed support for our joint pilot-project with Auckland Council, NZ Police and Ministry of Social Development to address Family Violence issues in our community” Roneel said.

A similar and clear message to community was passed by the White Ribbon Ambassador of West Auckland, Robert Khan and the Managing Director of Radio Tarana, one of the major sponsors.

“I must commend the professionalism and quality of Waitakere Indian Association, with whom my Radio Station has the honour of working for many years”, Khan said. He reiterated that a new similar organisation contemplated in South Auckland could borrow a few lessons on how to properly and professionally manage community organisations from WIA.

As the evening advanced, so did the tempo of the items, thanks to programme Director Manish Sharma alias DJ Gabbroo. The stadium filled up with over 10,000 people inside or milling around popular food and craft stalls.

After the rhythmic and stage-shaking grand finale, Nachde Punjab led the audience on the accompaniment of drums and dance to Douglas Race tracks for grand fireworks display that lighted up the clear and a little chilly Waitakere skies. The boom of the fireworks seemed to echo and reverberate against the far off Waitakere ranges.

The booming fireworks spoke about the success of Waitakere Diwali 2012, and the beating of Nachda Punjab Bhangra drums once again echoed the success of yet another Waitakere Diwali organised by Waitakere Indian Association.
