Fiji feeding scheme set to expand to India
A former Auckland man, who initiated a charitable feeding scheme for the children of Fiji, has plans to spread the programme on a large scale in India.

Sailesh Singh, a senior IT consultant from New Lynn, and Irshad Ali from Fiji, are in the planning / launching phase of a programme which could see thousands of families benefit from it.

Suva-born Singh, 37, who is now living in India, told sandesh.co.nz that although the scheme was operating in some parts of India on a small scale, he planned to launch it on a large scale soon.

The Nourish Fiji Children scheme works with people donating Vitameal product, instead of money, to distribution partners who will then identify and donate it to the needy children.

“We are still in the launch phase of the project,” Singh said. “Twelve bags of Vitameal have been sent by Nourish The Children from the US to Irshad who is currently trying out some custom recipes with Vitameal and has also sent a bag to Fiji Food & Nutrition Council to seek their approval of the product.

“In a nutshell, instead of donating money, people can donate the Vitameal product that is then sent out by Nourish The Children to their distribution partners who distribute the Vitameal to needed areas in the world.

“None of the contribution made by people goes towards any administration, distribution, or advertising costs. The contribution made by people pays for the Vitameal.”

“We will go full throttle as soon as approval is given by Fiji Food and Nutrition Council and the final bits of our logistics is sorted out by Rotary Fiji and Rotary New Zealand who are our distribution partners for Vitameal in Fiji.”

Singh, who plans to return to New Zealand in three-five years, said India was definitely on their list one Fiji distribution was underway.

Absolutely. India is already on my goal list. Vitameal is already distributed in India to some extent by Feed the Children, a distribution partner of Nourish the Children, but not on a very large scale. I hope to take this to a larger scale in the next two to three years.”

Singh said he and Ali have already had enormous satisfaction from the project although it was hadn’t gone live.

It hasn’t been fully realised yet, but it is satisfaction we get out of this. It’s difficult to describe the joy you get when you know that you are helping someone in need.

“I believe that everyone should always remember their origins and if they are in a better position than people back home, they have a moral responsibility to give something back to make home a better place.
“If everyone would contribute a little, the world will be a better place.”

Sandesh.co.nz also planned to include Ali, but he has been tied up with cleaning up operations after the recent floods in Fiji.
