Bakshi honoured for contributions to Indian community

National List MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi has been honoured for his contribution to the achievements of Indian-diaspora across the world at the New Zealand-Australian Punjabi Cultural Association’s second annual dinner in Melbourne, recently.

The association is made up of people of Indian origin who have lived in both countries but are now based in Australia.

The event attracted more than 400 Indians from New Zealand and Australia.

In his address to the association, Mr Bakshi discussed New Zealand’s social and economic position in comparison to other OECD nations, and highlighted the positive steps the Government was taking to ensure New Zealand remains a competitive economy, with strong economic growth.

“The audience was impressed with the National-led Government’s commitment to return to a budget surplus by 2014/15,” Mr Bakshi said.

“Our people are very happy with the progress and the direction the Government is taking to ensure that we remain progressive, innovative and responsible managers even under the current global economic conditions.”

This was Mr Bakshi’s third honour, having already been awarded the Pujabiat Da Mann award by the Punjabi Council of Australia at the New South Wales Parliament, and an award by Ishwar Dekha presented in London earlier this year.

“I feel humbled but at the same time am very proud of my contributions to my community and diaspora,” Mr Bakshi said.

“I sincerely hope that our Indian people continue to shine on the basis of the honest and sincere work we do.

“It is my aim to support our people of Indian descent, and with the backing of New Zealand’s National-led Government I am confident we have a very bright future ahead of us.”
