Indians warned of social media connections

Auckland Police are urging people of Indian ethnicity to be wary of connections made through social networking sites.
Three incidents have taken place over the past two months, involving the targeting of Indian males through social media website “Tagged”.
Two Indian men were recently lured by a woman, implying that she wanted to meet up with them. When the victims met with the woman at different places in Manukau they were tricked into a situation leading to them to be threatened by a man at knifepoint.
The offenders demanded cash, bank cards, pin numbers and any other valuables. When obtaining bank cards went straight to ATM machines and withdrew large amounts of money.
"Police understand that social media is a popular way of communication, but we want people to be vigilant when using these sites,” Manurewa Detective Sergeant Eddie Sutherland said.
“Public need to remember once information is disclosed via online sites it's there forever. Meeting up with individuals you may have met through the internet could put you in danger, cases of people being lured into dangerous situations are occurring more often.
“Always meet in a well populated public place and make sure someone is aware of your movements."
The male and female offenders involved in these incidents were arrested, charged, and appeared in court this week.
Police encourage any other individuals who may have had similar experiences to come forward. People can call Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1300 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
