Aucklanders make most of Dr Kane’s lecture

Dr Rajaram Kane, a eighty-fiye-year-old visiting physicist and expert in cosmic rays and astrophysics, enlightened an audience of more than 100 people in Auckland at a Public Lecture organised at the community hall in Onehunga on September 18.

Dr Kane, author of over 300 publications was visiting his family from Brazil, where he has been living for more than three decades. He is associated with National space research institute in Brazil.
His lecture was on “Sun Earth Relationship”. Dr Kane started with the history of Indian astronomy and the contribution of ancient astronomer-mathematicians Aryabhata and Brahmagupta to the world in cosmic physics.

His fluent style outlined the history of development of astrophysics and contributions made by Indian physicists over thousands of years. Dr Kane summarised how the ancient Indian astronomers were knowledgeable about the forces of gravitation and had worked out the circumference of the earth. He then took the journey from the ancient to the modern and outlined the importance of the Sun, discussing solar physics, solar flares, magnetic fields and climatic effects.

Although the lecture was of a topic in astrophysics, Dr Kane dished it out in an extremely interesting and easy way for everyone to grasp the central idea. His lucid style of narration and his scholarship and understanding of the subject made the lecture interesting for all who attended.

More than 100 people filled the hall and people were standing and also sitting in the front row on the floor. Considering popular request, Dr Kane continued the lecture well over one hour. He then answered questions and queries. People got an opportunity to meet with him at the end of the session. Doctors, accountants, bankers, self-employed people, adults, seniors and children were among the audience.
