Diwali lights up Auckland libraries

Auckland Libraries will come alive with colour, music, culture and food this October as we celebrate one of India's best-loved festivals.
From 1-15 October, Aucklanders can get involved in a range of Diwali activities at their local library that celebrate Indian culture, music, food, art and dance.
Kids will love the Diwali themed Storytime (appropriate for 3-5 year olds) or henna painting for a more hands-on experience. For the not-so-young, there is a chance to play Bollywood-style ukulele, sample a masala chai or samosa, listen to local celebrities, learn more about spices or see props and accessories used in India Ink Theatre Company productions.
Everyone can get involved in sari wrapping demonstrations, the fitness mad can try Bollywood-style aerobics, plus Hindi speakers can join a Q&A about Auckland Libraries’ services – Ask in Hindi.
“Libraries are a community hub and they reflect the community they are part of,” says Abigael Vogt, leader of Auckland Libraries’ Multicultural Service Development team.
“Festivals like Diwali celebrate and recognise diverse communities in Auckland. Through events, people can showcase their culture at their local library for all to share,” continues Vogt.
Auckland Libraries received recognition for its commitment to diversity in the Human Rights Commission 2011 New Zealand Diversity Awards.
Auckland Libraries deliver library and information services that are accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of the residents, diverse ethnic and community groups, and organisations that make up the Auckland region.
The Community Languages collections at Auckland Libraries include books, DVDs, magazines and newspapers. Learn Urdu or Hindi Audio Books or eBooks are also available, plus bilingual storybooks that are fun for children.
