Indo Kiwi Forum's Anna Hazare event

Auckland: A meet has been organised in Auckland by Kiwi Indians supporting Indian corruption campaigner Anna Hazare's continuing fast in New Delhi. His peaceful agitation is to bring pressure on the Indian government to strengthen the provisions of the anti-corruption law it is proposing to pass in parliament soon.
"The Auckland event is to highlight the mass movement against corruption in India. The gathering is to show support for India in New Zealand and to show our appreciation and support to the campaign launched by Anna Hazare - the face of India's fight against corruption. Anna has taken that fight to the corridors of power and challenged the rot at the highest level in India. People, the common man and well-known personalities alike, are supporting him in millions all over the world," says a communique from the Indo Kiwi Forum, the organisers of the protest meet.
The Indo Kiwi Forum is a platform that provides "a voice of Indians in New Zealand and has the objective to do all things incidental and conducive for the empowerment of Kiwis of Indian origin in New Zealand," says the communique.
India has been rocked by a series of high profile corruption cases involving political leaders, buraeucrats and certain corporate sector leaders. Billions of dollars have been reportedly stashed away in tax havens, some of which has been revealed by WikiLeaks.
Anna Hazare's agitation in April forced the government to introduce an anti corruption bill called the Lok Pal Bill, but the draft that it has presented does not cover even 0.5 percent of the government machinery, according to the agitationists. They are demanding more teeth to the proposed law including bringing the Prime Minister's office under its investigative purview a move the government is trying hard to resist.
The Indo Kiwi Forum comprises modern day Kiwi Indians with origins from India, Fiji, South Africa and other parts of the world. The body says it is targeting to be the largest group within the Indian community in New Zealand by the end of this year.
The Indo-Kiwi Forum has organised a meet at Aotea Square on Wednesday August 24 at 5 pm.
