Community marks Navtej Singh's first death anniversary

The first death anniversary of slain Indian Liquor store owner Navtej Singh was marked by a well attended function at Gurudwara Takanini Sahib on June 14.
Police Minister Judith Collins represented the New Zealand government along with Mr. Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, MP.
Ms Collins read the message of Prime Minister John Key – who acknoeledged Sikh community's contribution to multicultural New Zealand. An assurance was given by the government that it will try its best not to have such an incident repeated and 300 new front line officers are being inducted into the Manukau Police to control the lawlessness.
Mr. Bakshi during his speech also emphasised the effect that 300 new frontline police officers would have on the situation in Manukau. He also urged Indians to come forward and join the police force as this will provide better understanding between the Indian community and the police.
Daljit Singh a senior leader of the Sikh community introduced the leaders to the community and joined Nahar Singh, father of late Navtej Singh, in thanking all who had come to express solidarity with Navtej’s family.
