Kiwi Indians support Hazare campaign

Auckland: People power has shown how it can shake the foundations of the political establishment if glued together by a united sense of purpose. On Friday night India’s central government agreed to issue a government order that was accepted by activists led by Anna Hazare.

As well as a joint with a half-and-half ministerial-activist composition, the government accepted Hazare's offer of the committee being co-chaired by a member of the civil society, which is the only compromise the activists agreed to after the government said it would concede the chair to Hazare's group but no minister would be on it.

Of course, the activists are wise enough to hold out until the government issues an actual notification of the formation of the committee to draft a Lok Pal Bill to be tabled in the monsoon session of the Indian Parliament.

Indian Weekender was the first in New Zealand to spearhead a coalition of Non Resident Indians living in the country to lend support to the ongoing public action against corruption in Indian government and bureaucracy since February this year.

The ads released in Indian Weekender by the group received tremendous support and people are now in the process of organising a rally in Auckland to lend support to the great cause led by Anna Hazare. More information about the proposed rally will be published on this website shortly.

The support for the agitation was unprecedented in India. From the blind to the old and infirm, from students to young doctors, everyone came out in full strength to show solidarity with the Gandhian leader.

From daylong fast to candle march in the evening and nightlong protest against corruption, Anna Hazare triggered a tsunami of anger and emotions locked up inside Indians at the receiving end of corruption.

The scenes of the protest, fasting by the old people and young lending a shoulder spread the message visually through TV screens across the country and the world.
