High schools set to rock again

June 25 2009
High school dancers are set to rock the stage again this year at the Bollywood High School Dance Competition 2009 – Second Decade.
And this time the total prize at stake is a whopping $12,000 in the popular annual contest which is now in its 11th year.
Logan Campbell Centre in Greenlane will again host the dance extravaganza, which is expected to attract 30 high schools from around the country.
Competition organiser Binesh Sumer said interest in the dance fest had been growing each year.
“Last year, we had 24 schools but this time around we are looking at 30,” said Sumer, who himself heads a family of showbiz enthusiasts. His daughters, Deepa and Neera, and son Shiva, are well known in the entertainment circles in New Zealand.
In fact, Deepa will be making a guest appearance at the competition which will be held on August 22.
Sumer, who is organising the show under the Desi International Showbiz Ltd banner, said preparations were well underway for the event.
De La Salle College, the defending champions, will be returning for another shot at the crown, as will runner-up Pakuranga College and Lynfield College.
All participating schools will be given $200 each this year to help with their preparations and the winner will receive $3000 plus trophy on the night. First runner-up picks up $1500 plus trophy, and $750 plus trophy for the second runner-up.
Sumer, who has been involved in the entertainment industry for more than 20 years, the competition had always provided a grand stage for a host of young talent who were eager to strut their stuff.
“It’s not just Indians, but all races get involved and have a great time – it’ll be just bigger and better this year.”
