Tribute to a musical genius

Up and coming stars get their moment of glory when they take the stage for Shyamal Raval’s maiden musical venture in Auckland this Saturday, June 27.

O P Nayyar – a Tribute to the Musical Genius will be held at the Dorothy Winstone Centre, Howe St, featuring fledgling singers and performers from around Auckland.

Bringing in little known talents is a deliberate attempt by Raval to give exposure to those who have not had their moment on the big stage.

Perhaps the only known performer is Arpita Chanda, who has performed at numerous musical show in Auckland over the years.

Raval, an Auckland City Council enforcement officer, is a huge fan of old Hindi musical numbers and has always wanted to have his own show.

“A tribute to O P Nayyar is a fitting way to go about it,” Raval told Indian Weekender recently. “My aim has been to give exposure to unknowns, and I have every confidence in my musicians and the quality of singers.”

Along with Arpita and Raval himself, other singers are: Abhas Mazhar, Bhawna Kadam, Hemant Shirsat, Shweta Shirsat and Dharmesh Patel.

O P Nayyar, or Opee as he was known, was one of the greatest Indian music composers, best known for bringing Asha Bhosle to the limelight. He died in 2007.
