Experience a luau

Experience a luau

Ever heard of a luau? A Hawaiian luau?
It is a great traditional Hawaiian feast and now the Indian community living in New Zealand has a great chance to experience the uniqueness of the event.

A grand luau evening is being planned in Auckland on July 18 as part of a project to raise funds for a community trust initiative which aims to make funerals free to its members and their families.

July 18 will be a night of wine, dine, great entertainment and food, Pasifika style – all at Montogmery Rd, in Mangere, near the Villa Maria Wine Estate.

The evening is the brainchild of Albert Traill of the Hawaiian Hut, and the menu is set to feature the much loved Fijian lovo (or umu in Samoan, hangi in Maori) , plus 20 other choices of Polynesian oriented food.

Entertainment for the evening will feature Fijian, Hawaiian, Cook Islands, Samoan, and Tongan music.

Announcing the event at a recent community meeting, Traill said the luao concept was new to New Zealand, but was fast gaining popularity.

All proceeds from the evening will go towards the purchase of funeral home facilities for the community which will eventually allow free, or low cost, funerals for cash strapped families.
The funeral home initiative is a drive by the NZ-Fiji Community Support Services and Projects Trust which has already identified the funeral home to buy and is now in the process of raising funds.

The trust is headed by Auckland businessman Sam Achary who is confident this will be a pioneering project which will serve as a role model for other New Zealand communities to follow.

Tickets for the July 18 Luau evening are $150 per person, or $250 per couple. Albert Traill can be contacted for tickets through Sam Achary on 021 395 723. Function starts at 5pm.
