Auckland man who planned violent attack on non-Muslims jailed for two years

A man who planned a violent attack targeting non-Muslims, after becoming radicalised online, has today been sentenced to two years and five months in prison.

The 21 year old appeared today in the High Court in Auckland and has interim name suppression.

Last November, the man admitted threatening to kill, two charges of distributing objectionable publications and six counts of possessing objectionable material.

Crown lawyer Henry Steele said in court the defendant came "frighteningly close" to committing an extreme act of violence.

The man scouted numerous city locations for the attack he was planning.

The man was arrested a week after the LynnMall terror attack in September 2021, after telling a person on social media that he wished to bring his own plans for an attack forward.

A police search of his home found handwritten diaries in which he professed his support of the Islamic State, ISIS, according to the summary of facts.
